English as a Second Language |
The Boyle County Public Schools recognize the need to serve students coming from environments where English is not the primary language. Through the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, the ESL teacher shares with the regular classroom teacher the responsibility of educating students with limited English Proficiency.
Boyle County Schools serves a variety of ESL students. These students are enrolled in every school throughout our district. Varieties of instructional techniques are used: individual, small group, and large group. Emphasis is placed on the four domains of language acquisition (speaking, listening, reading and writing).
Upon entry into Boyle County Schools, each identified ESL student is assessed for his/her English competency. Each spring ESL students are reassessed to determine their annual yearly progress and the students’ ESL needs for the following school year.
Complying with No Child Left Behind (NCLB), the ESL teachers uses these assessment results to design a Language Service Plan (LSP) for each child. Parents are invited to attend the LSP meeting, along with the students’ teachers, and school administrators. |
